4worldlovers: Animal Welfare League of South Australia Inc (AWL) brings together lost and abandoned pets and caring humans to create happy homes where everyone feels loved.

4worldlovers: Our three shelters across South Australia – at Lonsdale (just south of Adelaide), Port Lincoln and Whyalla – care for thousands of injured, neglected, sick, surrendered and unwanted animals each year. Our shelters are a haven for animals that have been abandoned, lost, surrendered or have been victims of cruelty or neglect.

All RSPCA South Australia shelters support and facilitate animal adoptions. We also have cats and kittens available for adoption at selected Petbarn stores and at our West Lakes Adoption Hub. You can see all our animals currently available for adoption here.

Please note that we do not offer veterinary and behavioural services to the general public.

If you wish to donate items to our shelters, you can find a full list of items we can and can’t accept here. Donations can be made at any of our shelter locations, op shops and head office.

Located just south of Adelaide, our Lonsdale Shelter is the largest animal shelter in South Australia. From here, we offer a full range of adoption services. We also offer student placements and volunteer opportunities, and run an extensive foster care program from this site. There is also a pet retail shop on-site that stocks food, treats, toys, etc.

Closed: Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Our Stepney headquarters, located on Adelaide’s east side, offers plenty of volunteer opportunities.

At Port Road Vet, our team considers our furry companions to be a much-loved part of our family. For this reason, we take exceptional care to look after your pet when they come for a visit.


We have a small but dedicated team who really get to know you and your cat, kitten, dog, puppy or rabbit. Our excellent vets and staff provide outstanding care to our clients by taking the time to carefully check each animal while getting to know their individual personalities. Our vets are all members of the AVA.


Our regular consultations are 20 minutes long so we can thoroughly examine your pet without being rushed by the next appointment (most other practices have 10-15 minute appointments). We use this time to not only carefully check your pet, but also talk to you about the most appropriate treatment options or other ways forward for you and your pet.


We’re just a small team, you won’t see a different face every time you visit. Over time, our vets will get to know your pet’s health history and situation making care less stressful and more effective.

We strive to not only provide excellent medical and surgical care, but also to build and maintain a close relationship with you. We look after felines, canines and rabbits as well as other small pets.

Feral cats represent the greatest threat to many Australian wildlife species. They have been implicated in at least 27 mammal extinctions and currently threaten more than 100 Australian species, including mammals, lizards and ground nesting birds.

Feral cats also transmit diseases to pet cats, wildlife and humans, where the annual health costs of cat-borne diseases are estimated at over $8B a year in Australia.

Feral cats are notoriously difficult to control as they are reluctant to take baits or enter traps, particularly when their prey are abundant. But all cats are fastidious cleaners that groom regularly.

Thylation took advantage of this natural grooming behaviour by developing and patenting the Felixer, a novel, humane and automated tool to help control feral cats and foxes.

Thylacoleo (the marsupial lion) and Thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) were iconic Australian apex predators, which like wolves, lions and sharks once helped to balance the ecosystems they presided over.

Extinction of these apex predators has allowed secondary invasive predators, like feral cats and foxes, to decimate Australian species. Reversing this trend requires restoring the apex predator role.

Thylation is a verb coined to describe the reinstatement of the Australian apex predator capacity to protect wildlife threatened by cats and foxes. Although Thylacoleo and Thylacine can’t be brought back from extinction, thylation can be achieved through development of novel techniques to balance our ecosystems, mirroring the role of these once mighty marsupial predators.

Oaklands Wetlands and Oaklands Estate Reserve is along Oaklands Road adjacent to the Sturt River sand Warradale Barracks.

Sightings of small groups of these magnificent birds became increasingly common in suburban and rural areas after they learnt to exploit the cones of exotic pines as a food source. Their distinctive flight silhouette with a large rounded head, deep leisurely wing beats, and echoing “whee-la” calls make them easy to recognise. Although regarded as “Vulnerable”, large flocks of up to 200 birds or more may nevertheless be regularly seen in winter in the Mount Lofty Ranges.
