David qualified in Medicine in 1998 as a graduate of the University of Adelaide, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is also a Member of the Australian Society of Otolaryngologists – Head & Neck Surgeons, a Member of the Australian New Zealand Society of Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology, and a Member of the Interamerican Association of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology. David has undertaken further advanced training in Paediatric Ear, Nose, & Throat Surgery and from 2011 he has limited his practice to treating paediatric patients, from the age of 0 to 18 years, who may be suffering with Ear, Nose, and/or Throat issues.

Our four ENT specialists all deal with a broad range of conditions of the ear, nose and throat, both adult and paediatric.

Andrew Foreman is a specialist ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon practicing at ENTSA in Kent Town. Andrew graduated from Flinders University School of Medicine with honours in 2004 before undertaking basic surgical training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Andrew then entered the ENT surgical training program in Adelaide where he worked at all of the major public hospitals in Adelaide. During this time Andrew also completed a PhD, researching the causes of chronic sinus inflammation.

Professor Carney is one of Australia’s leading Academic ENT Surgeons. He graduated from Edinburgh University Medical School in 1989 with distinction in Surgery. He trained as a registrar in ENT Surgery in Nottingham and undertook Fellowships in both Head & Neck Surgery and Rhinology in Adelaide and New York.

In 1998, he was awarded the Gold Medal by The Royal Society of Medicine for the top candidate in the UK final ENT Fellowship examination.

He is Professor of ENT Surgery at Flinders University and was awarded his Doctorate for pioneering research into molecular changes in the nasal mucosa that precede the development of “hay-fever”. Between 2007 and 2011 he chaired the Flinders Clinical Research Ethics Committee and from 2005 to 2013 he was Head of the ENT Unit at FMC.

He has written over 150 book chapters and publications in scientific journals and has been a faculty member at over 150 national and international meetings. His biography has been published in “Who’s Who in the World” since 2001. In 2007, he was awarded one of 10 “Star Reviewer” ribbons by the American Academy of Otolaryngology. He is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy and was the Editor of The Australian Journal of Otolaryngology from 2008-2013. In 2008, he received a ministerial invitation to join the Clinical Senate of South Australia, a “think tank” of 40 leaders from all branches of health care. In 2009 he was appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Khon Kaen, in northern Thailand. In 2010 he received a citation from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council for his outstanding contribution to student learning.

He has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows, speaking on ENT issues and is highly regarded as a world expert in his field.

He has a special interest in diseases of the nose and sinuses, sleep surgery and Paediatric ENT and regularly teaches on these topics at surgical courses throughout Australia, Asia and in the UK. He is past President of the Australia and New Zealand Rhinologic Society and has been on the Board of the International Symposium of Infection and Allergy of the Nose, also chairing their Education and Training sub-committee. He has performed over 20,000 surgical procedures and has pioneered several new operative techniques and instrument designs for ENT equipment manufacturers. He is a Consultant for several pharmaceutical and medical technology companies.

Dr Varley graduated from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1989 and after completing his internship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital commenced surgical training in South Australia completing his advanced surgical training in ENT Surgery in 1998. During this period he also spent 12 months visiting at and working in centres of excellence in the United Kingdom.

Since being admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1999 he has worked in private and public ENT practice in Adelaide including 5 years as consultant surgeon at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (1999-2004) and 16 years as a senior visiting surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre (1999-2015).

He is also one of two founding surgeons of the South Australian Cochlear Implant Centre, Adelaide and Australia’s first private and fully indepedent Cochlear and Implantable hearing Solutions service. www.sacic.com.au

If you have recently returned from overseas, we request that you do not attend the clinic for 14 days from your arrival.

If you are unwell, we request that you do not attend the clinic, Dr Varley will speak to you by phone and arrange appointment time of lowest risk if necessary.
