4worldlovers: There’s usually a major drawcard at a playground kids keep asking to return to, and at this one it’s pretty obvious….The Biggest Playground Slide!

Upgrade construction works commenced on 27 February 2023. During the six month construction period fencing will be installed around the site and access to the Playground and Linear Park Pathway will be closed.

The first thing you notice at the Dunstan Adventure Playground is the super-sized slide. Better suited to older children this downhill racing strip is not for the faint hearted. It’s been around for a long time so yes, it’s made of metal (if it was constructed of plastic, at this huge length, it would not have lasted). Be warned that on a hot day the slide gets, well – hot! We visit it in the cooler months, or in the warmer months, early in the morning or early evening.

Along with the slippery dip the big kids will also appreciate the rope tower, suspended wobble footbridge and a decent length old style flying fox.

There is quite a bit to play on here with a range of play equipment to suit all ages:

The playground overlooks the O’bahn rail so kids can also enjoy watching the buses zoom past as they travel in and out of the city.

You can explore down at the creek, and watch the ducks on the Torrens too.

Located on a steep hill, along the Linear Park trail and beside the River Torrens, makes this a playground requiring extra caution. As the name Adventure Playground suggests, parent supervision is always essential, but here even more so. There’s no fencing around the playground, or along the river, cyclists ride along the path below, and you can see from our pics, the hill is very steep. There are a few shady spots to relax in as well as a lawn area, numerous benches and a picnic area with tables and seats. Unfortunately there are no toilets available here.

You can get to this playground by parking on Winchester Street, either on the road or in the small car park, or by walking or riding along the bike track below. The playground can be seen from Stephens Terrace, but you’ll need to enter off Tenth Avenue if driving there.

Nearby is one of our favourite bakery cafes, St Peter’s Bakehouse & Coffee Shop (on the cnr of Stephen Tce & Seventh Avenue). You’ll find a huge selection of the best cakes and pies here as well as rolls, drinks and of course coffee.

Stirling children grow up spending hours and hours of their childhood in Steamroller Park, and for good reason. The combination of varied play equipment, excellent public facilities and proximity to the main street make Steamroller Park a winner.


It’s an ideal place to take the kids if you’re out shopping or exploring in Stirling because there’s enough equipment and grassy hills to occupy the small ones while you socialise or relax on the benches. You see family gatherings and events in the Bandstand or at the bbq and benches of this park all the time.


Why not spend a morning or the afternoon at Steamroller Park with your family?


The centrepiece of the play equipment is of course the steamroller, and there’s an interesting story as to how Stirling came to acquire the steamroller. Originally order by the Mt Barker Council, it was being driven from Adelaide to Mt Barker when the driver stopped at the Eagle on the Hill for refreshment. In doing so, he forgot that the engine also needed lubrication, and so between Stirling and Aldgate the engine seized.

Mt Barker Council subsequently offered the steamroller to Stirling Council for a discount, and the offer was accepted. The steamroller came into service in 1927 and since its retirement it has continued to serve the community as play equipment in the park. Kids are particularly fond of climbing up on the steamroller and playing driver.

All of the play equipment in Steamroller Park is within a fenced area and its design provides variety and challenges for children.

Parking is adjacent, plus there’s a drinking fountain, seating, clean public toilets and a free bbq within the park.
