Roachdale Reserve was the first property to be donated to the National Trust of South Australia. This natural heritage reserve was gifted by Miss Hilda Roach in March 1957.
In a region extensively cleared for agriculture, Roachdale Reserve protects a rare piece of native bushland containing one of the few remaining stands of Long-leaved box forest, once widespread in the Mount Lofty Ranges. The reserve is traversed by a creek with deep pools which provide a summer source of water for a variety of wildlife. The reserve contains a wide diversity of plant species (225 indigenous to the area) including 32 of conservation significance. It also provides habitat for four birds of conservation significance and a Rare indigenous cricket.
The best time to visit is in spring or early summer when the wildflowers like orchids and lilies are out in full show. The Roachdale Nature Trail brochure available at the entrance to the Reserve and from the National Trust Head Office will help guide you around a walking track showing points of interest. A pdf is also available to download below . The walk is about 1.5 km long, with gentle slopes, allow 1 hour to do the loop.

Daniel Oors: Great place for a walk. Not too difficult to navigate, the paths are very visible but are a little narrow. Not overly steep however I just followed the Rockdale trail to the quarry where the track ends. A little bit of history to read in the car park as well. No public toilets though, so make sure you go before you leave or you might need to get close to a tree or a bush.

Most recently discoved mushrooms growing here, which was unusual since I've never seen them growing there before.Previously I have seen two quince trees around the entrance, full of fruit and I picked a few and put them to good use.Another highlight for me is the abundance of blackberries growing. Danni: Really enjoy this hike for its challenges in which involved climbing up rocks during parts of the trail and having to navigate your steps on some of the paths due to the rocks, crevasse and the narrowness. I found this fun and felt very accomplished once complete. This hike is NOT for those that cannot climb or have trouble on there feet, the hike it self has alot of areas with lose rocks, sand that is slippery, inclines, narrow walk ways, rocks that require climbing up or down. Some paths can be difficult to follow if you do not keep a look out for the signs so be sure to watch for the signs and read carefully. It can be very isolated out there and there is little phone reception.Good for those experienced. Also may mention, there is a sign that advices to not touch a certain flower as it is a weed nd spreads easily through seeds that attach to clothes however as the track is so un-maintenanced, this weed is every where, it is garenteed to be touched during the hike.Female. 26.

Val Kraken (ValKraken): Love the rolling hills, very steep with a river running through it. Go on a colder day as there wasn't much shade. Update: second visit with track that runs along the river. Plenty of shade and had so much fun jumping rocks this track was not steep at all!!

G Mac: A lovely way to spend the afternoon. Walked from the Festival Centre, up to the bridge near the Arena, walked up to St Peter’s cathedral, then back past the arena, rejoined the rive path, crossed at the weir and walked back. Just delightful.

Beat Odermatt: One of the best places around Adelaide to walk or to use a bike. Sadly some of the walking areas become overgrown with weeds especially during spring month. The area is used by dozens of walkers and bicycle riders.Extensive tracks are suitable walking, hiking, jogging, cycling and horse riding.Some of the tracks in the southwestern area are made exclusively for mountain bikes. The majority of tracks are shared between hikers and bicycle riders.Most of the the trees in the park were planted by volunteers during the last few decades. Wildlife including Kangaroos and Koalas are slowly returning to the area. The area is still overgrown with introduced weeds and attempts to enhance the biodiversity have been haphazard and sporadic. Most of the hard work such as planting trees and eradicating feral olives was carried out by a small group of dedicated hard working volunteers.It is a great achievement to have a large area of land set aside for recreation and for native fauna and flora so close to a major city.The recreation park has been integrated into a new Glenthorne National Park.

Frankie Boy: Wonderful walk, highly recommended. Amazing views and uplifting. Consider doing a figure 8 walk by following the Waite Loop clockwise until meeting the Sheoak Loop, and then do the Sheoak Loop counterclockwise before continuing the Waite Loop clockwise. Works out between 7-8 kms and can be easily done in under 2 hours with stops. This is one of my favourite walks in Adelaide. There is a car park available on the last road to the right when in the Waite campus, plenty of parking available on the weekend when we went.

The trees and shrubs matured and now look like they been here forever. Whoever is doing the upkeep they are doing an excellent job.The bird population changes season to season and year on year. A couple of years ago when there was a widespread dust storm the outback ducks discovered Laratinga and they are maintaining their presence ever since. I have just posted photos of Australian Shoveler. Pink eared ducks are around the water treatment ponds, you can see them through the fence.There are some interesting vagrants every time we visit. This weekend it was the Blue billed duck, photo posted. Chestnut and Grey teals seem to be residents.Clamorous read warblers were out in the open posing for photos.I am looking forward to our next visit.
