Fencing is a sport in which two competitors fight using blunt, electrically scoring swords. Points are made by contacting the opponent’s target. Although sword-fighting has a long and bloody history, fencing is a modern, safe sport, which has been contested in every modern Olympic Games.

There are three different styles: foil, epee and sabre. All use the same footwork and have similar underlying principles, but each has a different weapon and rules. Most competitive fencers choose to specialise in one weapon only.

Our new epee course will run for five weeks, starting on Wednesday nights from July 26th to August 23rd, between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM with time after to continue bouting.

This course aims to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the tactical and fast-paced sport of epee fencing. By the end of the course, you will have gained the necessary skills and confidence to continue learning and developing as a fencer, actively participating in club activities.

This course is designed for two types of individuals: those who have never fenced before and wish to explore the unique challenges of the sport, and those who have some prior experience and would benefit from a refresher.

Club coaches will lead the course following Global Fencing Masters methodology and cover the following areas:

Instruction and practice of specific skills, including understanding lines in epee fencing, hand positions, and blade work

Fencing exercises using electric weapons, with opportunities for scoring against other participants

The cost of the course is $90 for the entire five-week duration, and it includes all the necessary equipment. The course will be led by two experienced coaches. Payment is required at the time of registration.

Participants are only required to wear sneakers, long tracksuit pants and bring a water bottle.

Epee is one of the three weapons used in fencing and holds a direct lineage to duelling traditions. In epee, the fencer who lands the first valid hit earns a point. If both fencers hit simultaneously, both are awarded points. Furthermore, the entire body is a valid target area in epee fencing.

Engaging in epee fencing provides a more enjoyable way to stay fit compared to conventional gym workouts.

After the course, you will have the opportunity to join the club (at a pro-rata rate until December 31st) and register with Fencing SA. This will allow you to continue your development as a fencer by participating in club activities, learning from other members, or opting for one-on-one coaching sessions (ranging from $20 to $35+ per 20-30 minute session). Thus, our course offers excellent value for those interested in pursuing fencing further.
